New Project Empty
PostSubject: New Project   New Project EmptySat May 14, 2011 2:22 pm

With my desktop's motherboard being fried I had some boredom time and I decided that I'll be trying to make a cardboard 6 ft Thor battlemech. My plan is for this to be wearable. I'll throw some pictures below for those who aren't familiar with it's design. IF things work out well with it I'll be adding an additional layer of material to it that I haven't decided on just yet. It'll either be fiberglass, paper-mache, or more cardboard, or sheet metal. The first version should be quite nearly free to build just taking plenty of time. The second version will range from cheap to $100+ if I use sheet metal. If I think it can survive it, I'll also be installing my FN2000 into either the arm or torso.

I'll be basing my designs off of a papercraft model which is what I'll need to build first to figure out scaling dimensions.

Any suggestions on what to use to attach the cardboard to itself?

Ah. Interesting venture you're going on here, Victor.

When you say 'attaching it to itself', I'm assuming you're meaning like papercraft-ish pieces. If that' the case, the first thing would be small cardboard strips (held by hot glue) just to hold the rough shape until it starts to become 3D, then you could start reinforcing those joints. Prime example being my layered N7 armor torso. I roughly held the pieces together with out glue and a couple of foam strips until I got the exact shape and alignment I was wanting. Now it's held together by about a 1-inch deep layer of hot glue to permanently hold it. This method, however, is assuming cardboard.

That's about all I can tell you without more specifics.

Why the Thor? How about a Nova Cat, Loki, Mad Cat MKII? =P

Because I'd like to fit entirely inside the suit. With a reverse joint mech you'd have your legs visible. But mostly leg articulation is my main deciding factor. The nova cat also has multi-jointed legs. Another factor is overall complexity and what a person could comfortably fit inside.

The thor/summoner is a very iconic mech while still filling my requirements.

My current plan is to build the 25cm papercraft model and use that for measurements. The suit will be built out of cardboard first. I'll actually probably end up duct taping it from the outside along the edges and later attaching supports internally. Once that is done, I can build the harness to let me actually wear it. And finally if it works I'll layer it with better/different materials.

I'm really hoping it won't take nearly as much time as it's sounding like to get the basic suit built.

Also I will totally use it in airsoft if it can handle it or if it ends up being fast to build.

The initial suit with cardboard shouldn't take very long. Now, depending on what you layer it with afterward, it may take longer.

It's possible, provided I have enough cardboard on hand, that I could get the rough version of the whole suit built in a weekend.

I recommend cloth and epoxy resin, once you get enough layers built up it is near bullet proof(pistol calibers at least). other than that you won't have to worry about ANYTHING messing it up, metals ding and are heavy, paper-mache is... paper, but micarta will stand up to whatever you feel like and be light as the cloth you put into it.

I thought about an Atlas but don't like the hands on mechs. I did think about the Warhammer but the barrels would be unwieldy.

As for the epoxy, I'm leaning towards that the least. It would cost too much and be the hardest to build.
