| The rules are simple, is it real, or is it airsoft? Please leave a note as why you voted the way you did. Thanks and have fun. I will answer the question next friday. 45 Bravo | |

| I would say real.
1. I'm pretty sure Ruger doesn't make airsoft M4s but don't know that for certain. 2. The area around the ejection port looks discolored as if by powder residue or high temperatures. 3. The stock and the body look more rugged than normal airsoft quality materials.

| Researching it is cheating though. Got to go on instinct. | |

| Ok voting closed, I left the Ruger Trades in the pict just to see if anyone would bite. I just had to show off the reason i haven't had the funds for airsofting lately. My doctor's brother works for Ruger, and when they use a rifle for a trade show they offer to sell it to the employees for a reduced cost. This is a gas piston sr-556 that was demoed at the shot show 2011. It came with the rifle, 7 pmags, 1000 rnds of hornady ballistic tip ammo, and a crimson trace mvf, (flashlight & laser contained in the front grip. And a Ruger rifle bag. All for less than $900. It's good to have friends in certain places.. It makes me seriously wonder about these people that spend $1000 + for an airsoft gun. 45 Bravo | |

| It shoots better than my eyes are, and i haven't put a scope on it yet.
The only detriment is the crimson trace laser, being as it is off axis with the bore (low & left) it is only on zero at 1 point, closer than that it shoots high right, farther past zero, it shoots low left.
With the laser zeroed for about 50 ft. you will hit what you put the laser on out to about 80ft. but after that, use the sights. But as i don't intend to use it indoors, i see no real need for the laser & flashlight, at the moment.
Oh and loud, the Ruger flash hider seems to amplify the muzzle blast when standing off to the side as opposed to the standard M4 flash hider on a regular Ar-15. It just seems to be a sharper slap in the face, but shooting it you don't notice any difference.
45 Bravo.
As a side note: Most people that intend to use a firearm for home defense don't realize the noise factor involved, yes your .45 or 9mm is loud outside in the open range, but think how loud it would be at 4am when everything is real quiet, and you can hear every little sound, and in an enclosed room, and then you touch off this big cannon and then you don't hear anything for 3 hours.
From the other end of the gun, you are breaking into a house, and trying to be quiet, when this loud boom goes off, and even if you are not hit, you probably will mess yourself, making it easier for the K9 unit to follow you..

| O yeah.. I was very surprised by how loud it was the first time I shot a .223. That is a bummer bout the laser though, if it was only off in one direction that wouldn't be too detrimental, but low and left, ouch.
How well does the piston set up work compared to the normal gas arrangement? Or is the difference in performance even noticeable?

| No, you don't understand, I build Ar-15's for extra cash, (about $500 to build one, & sell it for about $800, and have shot them all, but the blast seems more severe than a regular m4 flash hider.
The gas system is cleaner, than a di system i guess, the bolt area stays cleaner, but the front gets fouled.
the removable short piston is easily cleaned. i think they will rethink the long rod in the long run, it is not easily user removable, and in my opinion (and you know about opinions) if it moves, you need to be able to access it.
but that may just be me.
but over all, the rear of the gun is cleaner.

| Ah so you're talking about the way the gasses vent through the flash hider right?
And I can't agree with you more on being able to access stuff. If it can move, then it can break(in some manner); therefore you need to be able to get to it.

| yes that's what i am talking about, when you are standing to either side of it, watching someone else shoot it, it seems harsher than a regular ar.
shooting it, it seem no different than any other.
must just be the way the gasses are directed. radially, rather than up.
