Here's a formal write up with more definite guidelines:

Special Materials:
Index cards, some marked "Innocent", some (or fewer, or one) marked "Traitor"

Players:
At least 3 players.  This game avoids issues with too many/too little players or uneven teams.

Field:
Whole field, plains + woods.

Time:
2-5 minute startup, 10-15 minute match

Objective:
Earn the most points out of the players in the round.
-A player with an "innocent" card earns 2 points for killing a traitor
-A player with an "innocent" card LOSES 1 point for killing an innocent
-A player with a "traitor" card earns 1 point for killing any other player
Points will be kept track of through the players remembering which players they killed and/or which players killed them.  Points will then be sorted out after the match as players reveal who amongst them were innocents or traitors.

Rules:
-Do not check your card until the match period has begun.
-Do not physically show your card to another player at any time throughout the round.
-After being eliminated and calling HIT, SILENTLY leave the field while KEEPING your card.
-You may tell another player what card you drew, but you are not obligated to tell, nor are you obligated to tell the truth.

Game Flow:
-Each player draws one card, does not look at the card, and pockets the card.
-Each player splits up throughout the field as wide as possible within 2-5 minutes.
-Once 2-5 minutes has passed, a referee or designated player will give the signal to start.
-Players engage until the 10-15 minute match period is over, as signaled by a referee or designated player-timekeeper.

Comments:
There definitely does not have to be a set number of "innocent" or "traitor" cards.  There should ideally be a huge stack with a comparable ratio of "innocent" to "traitor" (likely fewer "traitor") cards.  Just shuffle the cards and deal each round.  Perhaps one round, everyone is a traitor, thus essentially making a deathmatch game, but with everyone still overly cautious of who to kill.  Perhaps another round, everyone is an innocent, thus leaving everyone appropriately frustrated as points are tallied up after killing for absolutely nothing (and the person who killed the least that round would win).

Thoughts?  Suggestions for improvement?

Hmm... It definitely sounds interesting. It will need tweaking once we try it out to give the right incentives to caution and aggression. Perhaps a pistols-only version could also be implemented for a closer more intense match?

I'm definitely interested in this! I used to play this in Garry's Mod often.
As Lurcas stated, tweaking will surely be needed. I feel like the whole field may be too large. Perhaps just the woods?

I like this game mode. I think it'll be a good one to do with a smaller number of people, so like on less busy days. It might be interesting if dead players stay put so others can "investigate" their corpse to see if they were innocent or not. I just got a pistol too, so I can betray people with no M.E.D! Muahahaha!

smith and wesson M&P9. Got it because I've decided to get the real one in a few months. Going to be sweet. Gas efficiency on it seems alright. I'm not sure how to tell if the mags are full, so I might not be filling them all the way. Also ordered a G-code holster for it, but the wait times are going to put the arrival time after I go back to school.
